Schema markup for wellness websites
The cheapest technical fix available, and the one almost nobody has done.
Schema markup is code that tells a search engine what your page means rather than just what it says: that this is a business, this is its address, this is a class on this date at this price, this is a practitioner with these credentials from these issuing bodies. It is invisible to visitors and highly visible to machines. For a wellness practice it is usually the highest-leverage technical work available, it costs nothing but time, and it can be validated in a browser the same hour it goes live.
Which schema types a wellness practice needs
Not all of them. Four or five, done properly and kept accurate, beat a plugin that emits twenty and gets half of them wrong.
| Type | What it tells a machine | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| LocalBusiness | That you are a real business, where you are or what area you serve, how to reach you, what you charge and when you are open. This is the one that has to agree with your Google Business Profile exactly. | Essential |
| Person | Who practices here, what they are qualified in, which body issued each credential and in what year. This is where E-E-A-T stops being a claim and becomes data. | Essential |
| Service | What you actually offer, to whom, in what area, at what price. Prices in markup that match prices on the page. | High |
| Event | Each class, series and workshop with its date, time, location and price. Almost no wellness studio has this, and almost every wellness studio runs events. | High if you teach |
| FAQPage | Your questions and answers as structured pairs. No longer produces a visible result in Google, still parsed to understand the page. See below. | Worth keeping |
The event markup nobody has done
If you run classes, series or workshops and they are not marked up as events, they are invisible as events. A page that says “Restorative yoga, Tuesdays at 6” reads to a person as a schedule and to a machine as a sentence. Marked up properly, each session becomes a dated, priced, located thing a search engine can surface to someone asking what is on this week.
This is the single biggest gap I find in studio websites, and it is the one with the most obvious payoff, because a class with a date attached answers a question a person is actively asking. Most booking platforms will not do it for you, and the ones that do often emit it on their domain rather than yours.
What changed in 2026, and what most agency pages still get wrong
FAQ rich results are gone
Google retired FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. The expandable question dropdowns no longer appear in search for anyone, including the government and health sites that kept them after the 2023 restriction. Support was removed from the Rich Results Test in June 2026, and from the Search Console API in August 2026.
FAQ markup still counts
That is not a reason to strip FAQ markup off your site. Google confirmed it still uses FAQPage data to understand a page, FAQPage remains a valid schema.org type, and visible question-and-answer content is still one of the most extractable formats there is for an AI assistant. What died is the SERP decoration, not the usefulness.
Why it matters here: if someone is still selling you FAQ rich results, they stopped reading Google’s documentation months ago. And if your audit report tells you to validate FAQ markup in the Rich Results Test, that instruction cannot be followed, because the tool no longer reports on it.
Primary source: Google’s structured data documentation. Validate everything else at validator.schema.org, which checks the whole graph rather than only the features that produce rich results.
How I implement it
- 01Read what you already haveMost sites emit some schema without the owner knowing, usually from a theme or an SEO plugin, and usually incomplete or contradicting the visible page.
- 02Write the graph by handOne linked graph, not five unrelated blocks. Your business, you, your services and your classes referencing each other so a machine resolves them as one entity rather than five strangers.
- 03Match it to what a visitor can seeEvery price, credential and date in the markup exists in visible text on the page. Structured data that disagrees with the page is the one schema mistake that still carries a real penalty.
- 04Validate the whole graphNot just the parts that produce a rich result. Then check it again after your next theme update, because that is when markup quietly breaks.
- 05Hand you the filePlain text you own, with comments explaining what each block does and what to change when your details change.
